Caster Semenya's New Look

Caster Semenya's New Look

Hi Friends – I know that this is a Blog about Fishing, Cooking and all the Good Times that make living in a small seaside town so Wonderful  – but sometimes we have to take stock of the real world and get involved in what is going on around us.

Today, Caster Semenya’s gender test results are being released and I can’t help but feel a total sense of disgust over the handling of this whole affair.

Here we have an extraordinarily talented young woman, a teenager from a small rural village, who is being used and abused at every turn. Whatever her chromosomes or other invisible biological makeup is, she and others who have dropped her knickers – are certain that she is a woman.

Further more than that, she can be expected to know what is going on with her DNA, unless she has already been tested and is not disclosing the results.

Firstly, she is being abused by selfish politicians who do not give a flying hoot about her, other than that she has presented them with an opportunity to shake a sweaty, slimy fist at the “evil white man” and tirade for hours about racism when they themselves are racists of the highest order.

Metallica in DBN

Kirk Hammet from Metallica

Kirk Hammet from Metallica

What was truly one of the best days of live, Metallica ROCKED Durban to pieces.

I have waited my whole life to watch these masters shred and I was truly in heaven.

When my lifelong hero’s started to play, I grabbed my camera and headed for front row.

Years of sneaking into golden circle paid off and I easily hopped the fence and put on my best poker face.

I heard a security guy shout “hey you” but I just carried on walking and then sprinted into the crowd and moshed my way to the front.

The sound was fantastic and it was very hard to stay still long enough to snap some shots, but i knew that this was a once in a life time experience and I HAD to have some memories.

As soon as I had a few shots, I skedaddled back to my friend High, who was watching the rest of our stuff and we got down to some serious headbanging.

My buddy Haigh and I were like crazy animals, jumping up and down, singing and playing air-guitar.

James Hetfield, as usual, blew me away and to see him riffing, not even 10 metres from me was a life’s goal achieved.

After the last song and they said goodnight, the crowds all bolted for the door. BUT, I knew what was to come.

SEEK AND DESTROY … I have never seen a crowd go wild like that; and as I write I am feeling the goosebumps all over again.

Thanks to CokeFest and to Metallica for making so many dreams come true that day.

Now I just gotta see AC/DC —– whens the next CokeFest cos I am sending them a letter.

Thanks to 5FM for the tickets for me and my friends.

14 tickets – Nicole Fox … You Rock, we still salute you !!

Tattoo Festival

Mully from Electric Eye Tattoo

Mully from Electric Eye Tattoo

African International Tattoo Fest

Slingshot Productions: put together an incredible day of Ink, Steel, Colour and awesome people in one of the most beautiful venues in Durban, the Ocean Sports Centre.

Andrew Laubser from Slingshot,  Mallie (www.electriceye.co.za) and all those who played their part, really pulled out all the stops and it seems like the entire world was there.

Turn right and you see an artist that you have seen in international Tattoo Mags- Turn Left and you see and old friend and together you wonder around in amazement at these talented artists. The passion and love that the Tattoo community has for their art is evident in the constant chatter and “wow loook there” gestures of the visitors.

The production of the event was top class, with everything running perfectly smooth and it was evident from alll the smiles, that everybody got more than they bargained for.

Poor Mully, was booked from early till late and he must have done a bumper trade for the day. There are very few humans on this planet, who possess his element of skill and experience.  He won many prizes and I vote him to be among the top tattoo artists of all time – and yes !! – I am biased and he has done all four of my Tattoos.

If you are staging an event and want the best production team in Durban, contact Slingshot via their website

Well done Andrew and thanks again for the invitation for me and my guests. Shundeeeez !!

Enjoy the photos of the event and we hope to see you there at the next one.

I had an absolute BALL, thanks to Sandor for all the Beers.

The Sardine Run

// July 17th, 2009 // 3 Comments » // Fishing, Lifestyle

Once a year, on the east coast of South Africa, hundreds of millions of sardines migrate from the Cape up to Mozambique, where they dispurse and dissapear like magic.  Its called  “The Sardine Run” – see wiki

It is commonly known as  “The Greatest Shoal on Earth”

To say that the fishing is awesome,  is an understatement.   The millions of gamefish that follow them on their migratory route are feeding…. and when they are feeding, they are biting without caution – so if you ever wanted to catch fish “shot-for-shot” – now is the time.

Millions of whales, sharks and dolphins work together, herding the sardines into “bait balls” and feed until they are stuffed. You can swim right up to the sharks and they are too full to even bother about you. Ragged tooth sharks even lie on the bottom of the sea, like a fat uncle after christmas lunch.

Have a look at this awesome video and see for yourself how these amazing animals all fit into the great scheme of nature.

This year its been very slow and we have not seen much activity,  as its all been too far out to sea. A combination of heavy seas and warmer oceans, have kept the litle silver fish out of our reach. There have been small shoals that have appeared, but the majority have been elusive.

Global warming is a real crisis, which is happening right now.

Humans have to slow down and stop reproducing at the rate that we are or the Earth is not going to be able to sustain us for much longer.

Anyway, on a lighter note.l  If you a on around the South Coast, give me a call and I will take you fishing and show you some local secrets.

My number is 087 808 5321 (international +27 87 808 5321)

Fishermans Tales

// July 16th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Fishing, Lifestyle

FISHING WITH SANDOR AT SEABROOK ROCKS, MARGATE.

I went fishing the other day and caught this beautiful YellowTail off  Seabrook Rocks, on Margate Main Beach.

I used a steel trace and a big top-bung (float) with a whole sardine.

What a nice catch it was; on that particular day the fishing was very bad so all the locals were cheering when I brought him up.

We cooked him on the fire and had an awesome lunch with my buddy Sandor, who came to visit us for the weekend.

Baby James had a ball playing outside and watching Sandor re-landscape the garden and rip out everything that could cause damage to the house, oh and he insisted on cooking and cleaning as well. Perfect house-guest ….  please come again soon.

Recipe.

  1. I gutted and cleaned the fish and then cut it from under its chin all the way back to his tail.
  2. We then stuffed it with Onions, Mushrooms, Green Pepper, lots of Garlic and salt and pepper.
  3. We then wrapped it in Tin-Foil and put it on the braai over hot-coals.
  4. After 30 minutes or so and a few flips we took it off and gave it a prick with a fork. (if the fork comes out clean, then it means that it’s cooked)
  5. We served this gift from the ocean with some home-made, thick cut chips and a fresh salad.
  6. Lips were smacking and a great meal was had by all.

Join me fishing anytime.  Just give me a shout and we will work out a date.
