Today- I have decided to write a bit about my home town as I speak alot about Margate, but who really knows where it is, or what goes on in this beautiful Seaside Paradise.
Margate is about 130 kms south of Durban, on the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast.
The major towns on the South Coast are Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh, Port Shepstone, Margate and Port Edward, which borders on the Transkei.
The river which flows into the sea at Margate is called “Nkhongweni” (place of entreaty) because the original Zulu locals were so inhospitable that travellers had to plead for hospitality and right of passage
In 1908, an English surveyor, Henry Richardson, laid out the town on a map and named it Margate, after another seaside resort on the northern coast of the county of Kent, in the United Kingdom.
Since then, Margate has grown to be one of the most popular Seaside Resorts in South Africa, with holiday seasons being a hive of activity and revelry. First time visitors are shocked at the cunningly located shopping malls, which blend into the natural serenity while still offering a rich selection of the countries leading chain stores.
Local businesses thrive, selling everything from Fishing Equipment to Speciality Meats and provide all the goods and services that you can expect in a modern city.
There are ample Bed and Breakfast, hotels, camping and backpackers establishments.
Ready to handle the biggest influx of visitors, including the world cup soccer 2010
The town is safe, the locals are friendly and the whole vibe of the town, reminds me of what Durban used to be like. The first thing that I noticed when I moved down here is that everybody seems to be on holiday, everybody is smiling and there is something to do on every street.
I am a fisherman – and I have caught more fish living down here, than I have in my entire life put together.
The water is clean and virtually free of pollution and you can most definitely taste it in the fish that you eat.
There is an unbelievable choice of reef fishing, surf fishing, deep sea fishing and some of the most beautiful, unspoilt fishing spots that I have ever seen anywhere. There are piers, points, drop offs and rocky outcrops to keep the most energetic angler panting for more.
Margate is one of the few towns which still has its Blue Flag Status, with Durban loosing its Blue Flag due to pollution and unacceptable content of human waste in the water.
The streets are well lit and there is an abundance of municipal workers always busy working to Keep Margate Beautiful.
One of the things that I really enjoy about the town, is all the eat-as-much-as-you-like Specials.
There is an awesome selection of restaurants and buffets, which offer ridiculously cheap specials, almost every night.
Feats on Ribs, Monday Night. Eat Prawns on Tuesday Night. Wednesday is a Buffet. Thursday its Pizza and Friday is a relaxing braai on the beach, watching the sun set.
Does this not sound like paradise ?
Come and see for yourself.
Feel Free to ask me any questions.

I absolutely love Margate. We always have such a jol, we have been going there for years. I love it that we can sit on a safe beach, while hubby is fishing.
Lots of nice restaurants and its very clean.
Margate is absolutely beautiful and it’s the best place that I have ever lived.
My life has changed, since I have moved here.
